Envisioning the Possibilities Together

By: Michelle Larscheid, Program Coordinator

The 11th PRISMS International Conference brought together the Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS) community for three days of connection and education. It Is the largest conference specifically focused on SMS in the world. With 313 registrants, 167 first-time attendees, 62 presenters, 51 SMS individuals, 34 family scholarship recipients, and 12 teacher/support staff recipients, the Hyatt Regency in Dallas, Texas, was filled with our SMS community.

A First Steps session was held to welcome, engage, encourage and support new conference attendees throughout the conference. It served as an opportunity for new families to interact with one another as well as interact with “veteran” parent ambassadors.

New this year to the conference was our sibling program. The siblings had their very own room filled with some fun furniture and games to play. They participated in a Reunion Tower tour where they got to see a 360-degree view of the city of Dallas. The siblings were also visited by the Heart of Texas Therapy Dogs. These furry, gentle dogs got a lot of love and hugs from our siblings.

On Friday night, a party was held on the rooftop of the Courtyard by Marriott for a PRISMS fundraiser. Over $14,000 was raised which will go directly to supporting people living with SMS and their families. It was wonderful to celebrate with the PRISMS community. A huge thank you to Vanda Pharmaceuticals for their sponsorship of the event.

In between sessions, our families found time to visit our PRISMS store to buy new merchandise, participated in research opportunities, and stopped by the exhibitor’s hall to meet the PRISMS Board and visit our sponsors. Most of the downtime was spent visiting with other SMS families to share stories and make connections.

We know that the PRISMS conference is an important step for many families on their journey of learning about and living with SMS. Kathleen, a mom who attended the conference summed it up. “I am so grateful for this community. I love reconnecting with old friends and making new connections. My heart is full. I am grateful for the people dedicating their lives to researching the complexities of SMS within the genome and grateful to all the educators, support staff, therapists, paras, aides, advocates, etc. who have chosen to improve the quality of life for our kids and adults. I am grateful to the doctors and nurses who listen to the parents, research, and communicate with other peers to prescribe the best course of action. Seeing everyone together, in this capacity, widens my lens and fills me with joy, and hope.”

For those of you who were not able to attend, a portion of the conference presentations and handouts are available on our website. Make sure to mark your calendar for the 12th International Conference on July 11-13, 2024, in Dallas at the Hyatt Regency. We can’t wait to do it all again.
